MONDAY

Today we will review new terms, and continue learning from Elements of Style on topic sentences. Then I will read your paragraphs from summer.

WEDNESDAY

We will continue with new terms, and Elements of Style. Then we will read your essays modeled on H.G. Wells's essay on A Hanging.

FRIDAY

You will take a quiz on terms and on deadwood. Then we will read our next essay from the Great Books vol 1, Melian Dialogue. This will begin with a prereading discussion, followed by a reading, and then writing answers to Interpretive Questions.

WEEK OF 8/15 - 8/18

MONDAY
* first quiz on terms - review next batch of terms - begin study of grammar with Elements of Style - read second essay - begin first writing assignment modeling the essays we have read
WEDNESDAY
* continue review of terms - Elements of Style - read 3rd essay - work on your essays

WEEK OF 8/8 - 8/12

TUESDAY
* introduction - review syllabus - discuss course materials - discuss language - hand out rhetorical terms - read humorous rules of grammar & headlines
THURSDAY
* begin discussing/explaining each rhetorical term from list of 150 - continue list of humorous rules of grammar & headlines - read first essay by Mike Royko
