WEEK OF 10/17 - 10/21/11

TUESDAY

We shift gears this quarter. We have mastered grammar, deadwood, rhetorical terms, and writing that brings out our particular, distinctive voices. Now we begin a more rigorous phase of the course: reading comprehension & the dreaded analysis essay. We begin to strengthen our reading comprehension through the Great Books essays, starting with The Social Me by William James. We begin with prereading questions and discussion. Then we read the essay aloud. Students then will answer Interpretive questions. Finally we will discuss the essay based on your answers to those questions.

Additionally, I will introduce what the analysis essay entails, and give you a sample, along with some student answers.

THURSDAY

Today's Great Books essay is Why War? by Sigmund Freud, following the same format as previous. We will work together on answering our first analysis essay.
